Golf Survey Released

The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America recently completed a national survey of golf facilities and their conservation practices. The study is part of a multi-year project to document environmental stewardship by golf courses.

Key findings include:

• Golf courses account for 0.5 percent of all water used annually and just 1.5 percent of all irrigated water applied.

• Only 14 percent of golf courses use water from municipal systems.

• At 18-hole golf facilities, superintendents are conserving water by using wetting agents, hand watering and keeping turf drier than in the past.

• Superintendents base decisions to apply water on multiple sources of information.

• Recycled water is used by 12 percent of golf facilities nationwide and

37 percent of those in the Southwest.
